Should Apple Invest in Twitter?

A recent article in the New York Times says that Apple is considering a stake in Twitter. Does it make sense for Apple to spend money on Twitter to advance its social media strategy?

Apple has always been bad at anything social. Remember Ping, which was supposed to be the “social network for music,” allowing you to share what you’re listening to with your friends? Huge failure.

And even though Apple has introduced Facebook integration in Mountain Lion–pulling info from Facebook into Contacts, easy Facebook uploading from lots of applications–and has built Twitter integration into certain apps on the iPad and iPhone, their heart really has never been in online sharing. They’ve always focused on making your Mac the center of your digital world, and having you manage everything from your Mac.

So I don’t think that a simple investment in a major social media platform is going to be enough to pull Apple towards an interest in social/sharing that is really beyond their core business and their true interests.
