Date: April 4, 2012

Time: 8:30-10:30 PM Eastern

Location: Your Home

You’re using your smartphone and your digital camera to document your children as they grow, and you’re using iPhoto on your Mac to store your photos. But did you know that with a few simple clicks in iPhoto you can make your photos go from good to great? And are you aware that iPhoto has lots of options for sharing photos both digitally and in print?

Join Caroline Green of IvanExpert as she shows you tips and tricks on how to use iPhoto on the Mac to crop, brighten, reduce red-eye, and perform other simple adjustments that can vastly improve your family photos. She’ll also show you some of the ways iPhoto helps you share your photos with friends and relatives, including books, calendars, slideshows, and social media.

This webinar covers iPhoto ’11, although most of the tips will work in previous versions of iPhoto as well.

This event is sponsored by Mommybites, an online community for quality parenting resources, support, and education.

Be More Productive and Creative Using Your iPad

Ways to use your iPad for art-related business, in 5 different categories.

Our art clients say that showing work on their iPad is the main reason they purchased it, and the number one thing they bought it for. In a gallery, at an art fair, or in a client meeting, the iPad is an amazing presentation tool. Here’s how to take advantage of its visual capabilities.

Apps for showing work that have an extensive back-end system and are priced accordingly:

Portfolio apps that allow you to include specifications and allow you to have multiple portfolios:

These are standalone apps, which means you will need to enter all the data manually.

Portfolio apps with limitations of different kinds:

Most of these apps either have nowhere to put art specs, or they allow you only one portfolio. However they might prove useful for creating a special presentation. Each has a slightly different design and functionality, and some allow you to create video and audio portfolios too.

Many of our clients are doing work on the iPad when out of the office. In addition to email, here are a few other ways to use it for work:

  • Dropbox for access to all work files is essential (free under 2GB)
  • Pages and Numbers, but who uses these in the real world ($10 each)
  • Word, Excel docs on it: Documents To Go ($10), QuickOffice Pro ($20)
  • FileMaker Go, if you’re using FM (TK)

Collect contact information in person, at a show or event, and then import the data to your computer as a spreadsheet.

You can’t use any of the business card scanner apps designed for the iPhone, as the camera on the iPad isn’t good enough (yet). For the iPhone, check out ScanBizCards, $7.

Allow contacts to put their own info directly into your iPad with the following apps:

  • CounterCulture, $5, collects name and email only (no addresses)
  • FormConnect, $10, create custom forms, design options are limited
  • Bento, $5, create databases, design options are limited

The iPad can be used for managing finances when outside the office.

You may be able to do banking from your iPad; see if your financial institution has an iPad app available.

Accepting credit card payments:

  • Square
  • Intuit GoPayment
  • Others, talk to your merchant provider

Tracking expenses:

  • BizXpense Tracker, $6: Data can be exported or synced with DropBox. You can log data by client. You can take pictures of receipts and link them to expenses.
  • iExpensesClaim, $1: Data can be exported in CSV format. You can take pictures of receipts as well.

These are basic security considerations to keep in mind when using your iPad for business.

So nobody can look at your data:

  • Use a lock code, and set it to lock after a few minutes
  • Put an “If Found” screen on it (Wallpaper LockScreen Text, $1)
  • Track your iPad if it’s lost or stolen, and remotely wipe it (Find My iPhone, free)

So nobody can walk away with your iPad:

So people can’t switch to another app:

Apple doesn’t allow any apps that prevent people from using the home button or getting back to the home screen. So if you want your iPad to be locked to a specific app, you’ll need to buy one of these pieces of hardware.

  • BubCap, $5 for 4: Designed for children. Available at different strengths. Unfortunately it has an ugly logo on it.
  • VantagePoint home button adhesive cover, $10: Allows you to reset with a paperclip only. Works best with their case.
  • There are also special iPad cases designed for “kiosk use” that cover the home button.
